Shane McConkey dies filming in the Italian Dolomites

The news hasn't even been out for a day,  yet thousands of fans across the globe have made a point to let it be known; a legend has passed in the worlds of ski, freeski, big mountain skiing and ski BASE. Arguably one of the greatest skiers of all time and ski BASE pioneer, was killed on Thursday, March 26th in Italy while filming. EPSN reports that he was in the middle of a double back flip in an attempt to fly away from a cliff with a wingsuit (seen left).  His special bindings did not release and one ski stayed on causing him to descend in an inverted position with his feet over his head.  His situation worsed as he entered a tail spin and eventually died on impact at least 400 feet below the jump when he his snow.

Shane is survived by his wife Sherry and a 3 1/2 year old duaghter, Ayla who both reside in Squaw Valley where Shane had moved from Colorado in the '90s.

On March 25, Shane posted his last blog.  More...

RIP SHANE McC
